In Times of Recession, Botox Beats Out Facelifts
Cosmetic surgeons are saying that surgeries such as facelifts and breast augmentations are down, while procedures that don't entail going under the knife - and which are less expensive - are up. This is according to a recent study by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. "What they found is that 53 percent of the plastic surgeons were actually seeing a 30 to 40 percent decrease in the business," said Dr. Constantino Mendieta, a cosmetic surgeon in Miami. The worsening economy, he said, has caused Americans to turn away from expensive procedures, and to rush instead to get cheaper cosmetic work done on themselves, such as botox treatments, wrinkle injections, liposuction or mini-facelifts. Breast Cancer Surgery Stressing Cosmetics Over Cures?
Recent innovations in breast cancer surgery that allow doctors to minimize postsurgical breast deformities may be stressing cosmetic outcomes to the detriment of actual rates of cure, a senior physician warned recently.
“We must ensure that surgical approaches designed to improve cosmetic outcomes do not increase local failure and the risk of subsequent death from breast cancer,” said Monica Morrow, chief of the Breast Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The guiding principles of breast cancer have always been to treat the disease first and offer the hope of restoring the body image second. There has never been serious deviation from this standard. The cancer surgeon must do what they feel that they need and what they can prove that they need. Bizarre incisions and overly aggressive breast ablation has no place in the concept of evidence-based medicine.
