Bladder cancer causes the death of around 13,000 people in America every year. Dr. Sherryl Lee urges people to pay attention to possible signs of the disease. Dr. Lee claims, "Bladder cancer is not as common as other cancers we often hear about, like prostate cancer and breast cancer. We know that older people tend to develop bladder cancer. The average age is around the range of 65; so it's much more common in older populations. Those who smoke are always at greater risk, so we always want to caution people about smoking; we recommend smoking cessation programs. Those who have been exposed to chemical agents, particularly at work, like industrial solvents, paints, paint thinners, increase the risk of bladder cancer development." Nanoparticle Technique Delivers More Medicine to Tumors
Extremely tiny particles, or nanoparticles, can now be loaded with 20 times more cancer drugs than ever before, and the load delivered direct to malignant tissue, avoiding many of the awful side effects of cancer chemotherapy, recent research demonstrated. The study, published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, employed a safe, biodegradable polymer, or chain molecule, that had been chemically crafted to disrupt the so-called MARK signaling pathway that's involved in most human cancers. I think a better term for the therapies recently reported in Cancer Research would be targeted small molecules. Nanoparticles are formulations of various chemotherapeutic drugs that improve the delivery of chemotherapy. The most commonly used nanoparticle medication is nanoparticle bound paclitaxel, sold as Abraxane. This allows this particular chemotherapy to be dissolved in water. Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the Polypill. The Polypill is being developed in response to an important reality surrounding cardiovascular disease. There are three important drugs that can help prevent heart disease (statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin). These drugs are not taken for two major reasons. First, the drugs are simply too expensive for much of the world, including countries as developed as Russia. And secondly, in developed nations where the drugs are affordable patients too often fail to comply - after three years 70% of patients do not take the medications as prescribed. JAMA - Men's Health Briefing
An estimated 10 million men 40 years or older have symptoms consistent with overactive bladder. Now, new research shows a combination of two medicines which work differently works better than using only one medication. The researchers compared using detrol la—which works on the bladder and flomax—which works on the prostate-- either alone or in combination in men with overactive bladder and a benign enlarged prostate and who complained of having to go to the bathroom a lot. Dr. Steven Kaplan, the study author at Weill Cornell Medical College, says, “The particular symptoms that we actually are concerned about is getting up at night to urinate, going frequently to the bathroom. This is actually the largest study ever done in men who have both a bladder problem and a prostate problem and we found that by treating both we have enhanced the quality of life in men with urinating symptoms.” (Read more about JAMA - Men's Health Briefing)
